Introduction
In August 2024, the Metanoia Kleos Empowerment Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to spreading awareness about mental health, had the opportunity to visit Modern Urdu Public School. Our mission during this visit was to educate students from kindergarten to standard 8 on five important pillars: good touch/bad touch, bullying, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. This report outlines our activities, the response from the children, and the overall impact of our visit.
Objectives of the Visit
The main objectives of our visit to Modern Urdu Public School were to:
1. Raise awareness about mental health issues among young students.
2. Provide knowledge about personal safety through the good touch/bad touch concept.
3. Discuss the harmful effects of bullying.
4. Help students identify and understand feelings of anxiety and depression.
5. Boost self-esteem among children by encouraging open conversations.
Activities Conducted
Over the course of our visit, we conducted a series of interactive sessions that included workshops, group discussions, and fun activities. Each day focused on one or two of our five pillars.
Good Touch/Bad Touch
On the first day, we introduced the concept of good touch and bad touch. Using age-appropriate language and examples, we explained what constitutes safe and unsafe touches. We engaged the children in role-playing activities where they practiced saying “no” and seeking help. This interactive method helped them feel empowered and informed about their personal safety.
Bullying
The second session focused on bullying. We shared stories and examples that highlighted the effects of bullying on both the victim and the bully. The students participated in discussions about their experiences and feelings. To reinforce the message, we organized group activities where the children brainstormed ways to combat bullying, fostering a supportive environment among peers.
Anxiety and Depression
In the following sessions, we addressed anxiety and depression. We simplified these concepts so that young children could understand them. We introduced techniques like deep breathing and mindfulness exercises to help them manage anxiety. We encouraged students to talk about their feelings and provided strategies to cope with sadness, emphasizing that it is okay to seek help.
Low Self-Esteem
Our final sessions were centered on self-esteem. We discussed what self-esteem means and why it is important. Activities included self-affirmation exercises, where each child shared something positive about themselves. This not only boosted their confidence but also helped create a culture of positivity and encouragement among classmates.
Student Engagement and Response
Throughout the visit, the response from the children was overwhelmingly positive. Each day, they greeted us with smiles and excitement. Their enthusiasm was evident as they eagerly participated in discussions and activities.
Many students expressed their appreciation for the knowledge they were gaining. They asked thoughtful questions and shared personal stories,
demonstrating their willingness to engage with the topics. By the end of the week, it was clear that they had absorbed the key messages about
mental health and personal safety.
Emotional Impact
The emotional impact on the students was significant. Many children shared that they felt more comfortable discussing their feelings. Several students expressed that they previously felt alone in their struggles but now understood that it was okay to seek help. The workshops created a safe space where they could express their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment.
Feedback from Teachers and Staff
The teachers and staff at Modern Urdu Public School were very supportive of our initiative. They reported that students were discussing the topics at lunch and during breaks, which indicated that our messages were resonating. The school staff expressed interest in continuing this kind of education in the future and appreciated our efforts to promote mental health awareness.
Conclusion
The visit of the Metanoia Kleos Empowerment Foundation to Modern Urdu Public School was a successful initiative aimed at educating young students about critical mental health issues. By addressing the topics of good touch/bad touch, bullying, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, we empowered students with knowledge and skills that are vital for their personal growth and safety.
The joy and engagement from the children reinforced the importance of such programs in schools. We hope that this visit will lay the foundation for ongoing discussions about mental health in the school community. Moving forward, we aim to partner with more schools to continue our mission of spreading awareness and support for mental health.
